Auto Car Finder Buyer Safety & Scam Awareness
Auto Car Finder is a marketplace platform. We work to promote safer buying and selling, but buyers should still take reasonable precautions when contacting sellers, viewing vehicles, making payments, and completing transactions.
1. Marketplace role
Auto Car Finder is a platform that connects buyers and sellers. We do not inspect every vehicle, control every seller, or guarantee the accuracy of every listing. Buyers are responsible for carrying out their own checks before making a purchase.
2. General safety principles
Before buying any vehicle, always:
- verify the seller’s identity and contact details;
- inspect the vehicle in person where possible;
- check documents carefully before paying;
- avoid rushed decisions or pressure tactics;
- keep written records of important communications.
3. Before contacting a seller
Take a careful look at the listing before you enquire. Check whether:
- the price looks unusually low compared with similar vehicles;
- the mileage, year, and condition make sense together;
- the photos look genuine and consistent;
- the seller details appear complete and realistic;
- the description contains contradictions, vague claims, or obvious red flags.
4. Warning signs to watch for
Be cautious if a seller:
- pressures you to pay quickly or urgently;
- refuses an inspection or makes excuses to avoid seeing the car;
- asks for a deposit before you have verified the vehicle properly;
- wants payment sent to an unrelated third party;
- cannot explain missing documents, suspicious damage, or inconsistencies;
- uses copied photos or repeated listings with conflicting details.
5. Verifying the vehicle
Before buying, try to verify the vehicle thoroughly, including:
- VIN or chassis number, where available;
- engine number and registration-related details where relevant;
- service history and maintenance records;
- mileage consistency;
- accident repairs, bodywork, paintwork, and signs of structural damage;
- whether the vehicle has finance, insurance history, or other risk indicators.
Consider using a trusted vehicle history check, roadworthy inspection, or independent mechanic before making a final decision.
6. Viewing and test drives
When viewing a vehicle:
- meet in a safe public place or at a verified dealership;
- avoid isolated meeting points where possible;
- do not attend viewings alone if you feel unsure;
- test drive the vehicle only when it is safe and lawful to do so;
- ask questions about ownership, condition, accident history, and service records.
7. Payments and deposits
Use extreme caution with payments. In particular:
- do not pay a deposit or full amount until you are satisfied that the vehicle and seller are genuine;
- avoid cash where possible for large transactions;
- be wary of proof of payment screenshots that have not actually cleared;
- make sure bank account details belong to the correct seller or dealership;
- keep invoices, receipts, and proof of payment records.
8. Documents to check
Before finalising a purchase, ask to review relevant documents, such as:
- proof of ownership or authority to sell;
- vehicle registration papers or relevant registration details;
- service books and maintenance records;
- roadworthy or inspection documentation where applicable;
- finance settlement or release information if relevant.
If anything appears inconsistent, incomplete, altered, or suspicious, stop and investigate before proceeding.
9. Finance and affordability
Any affordability or finance tool on Auto Car Finder is only a guide. It is not a guarantee that you will qualify for finance or that a particular lender will approve your application.
Always review the full finance terms, repayments, fees, insurance obligations, and total cost of credit carefully before signing anything.
10. Duplicate or cloned listings
Some suspicious sellers may attempt to advertise the same vehicle multiple times, copy another dealer’s photos, or reuse vehicle details in a misleading way. If you see multiple listings that appear to be for the same vehicle, do not assume they are legitimate without checking.
Compare photos, seller details, pricing, mileage, and vehicle descriptions carefully. If something seems wrong, report it to us.
11. Reporting suspicious activity
If you suspect fraud, duplication abuse, cloned listings, fake pricing, stolen images, or any suspicious seller behaviour, please report it to Auto Car Finder as soon as possible.
When reporting an issue, include as much detail as possible, such as:
- the listing URL or listing ID;
- the seller or dealership name;
- screenshots or supporting evidence;
- a short explanation of what appears suspicious.
